Been continuing to think over this post, and reflecting on the things that can hinder people ‘tasting good fruit’ when we teach and preach the word.
We do need to preach the whole counsel of the word. The whole gospel. The truth and nothing but the truth. Holding back on any part leads to error. However, there are (at least) three scriptural filters which are helpful to have in mind as we seek to bring truth and correction:
And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. – 2 Timothy 2:24-26
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. – Colossians 4:6
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their slander – 1 Peter 3:15-16
Of course “setting apart Christ as Lord” pre-supposes that we’re going to receive as our greatest commandments to love God and love our neighbour.
